Abueg Lectures on Style
Efren R. Abueg delivered a faculty lecture on style at the De La Salle University - Dasmariñas. The structure of his notes outlined the importance of diction, syntax, rhythm and the use of dialogue in style. In the illustration of his points, Abueg used excerpts from literary works; traditional scholarship would classify the novels he cited as both “literary” and “popular,” the former usually published by university presses (like UP’s) and the latter by commercial imprints (like Valentine Romances).
The novels Abueg mentioned in his lecture are Sa Mga Kuko ng Liwanag (Edgardo M. Reyes), Maaari Ba Akong Mangarap? (Elena M. Patron), Mapanganib Ang Pag-ibig (Gilda Olvidado), Dugo Sa Bukang-liwayway (Rogelio Sikat), and Gapo (Lualhati Bautista).

Can we ask about Reyes’s Ang Mundong Ito ay Lupa?

Yes, sure. What about it? FYI: “Ang Mundong Ito Ay Lupa” was originally serialized in Liwayway from November 13, 1989 to June 24, 1991 (85 chapters) before it was released as a book by C&E Publishing in 2005. Roberto t. ERA was my mentor. I am glad he’s still doing the things he loves to do. I was lucky to be a part of the group of “young writers” he mentored during the late sixties and the early seventies (indeed, a very interesting period in Philippine history). Anyway, I since traded literary pieces for legal briefs, and I since moved to Sacramento, CA
