Tanikalang Guinto

AVE 14 of 300:
Entablado’s Tanikalang Guinto by Juan Abad
Directed by Jethro Tenorio (2008)

Every first Monday of February is an Ateneo holiday, but last February 4, I had to go to school to watch the critics’ night of Entablado’s latest production, Tanikalang Guinto by Juan Abad, which was first staged in Teatro Libertad in Manila on July 7, 1902. This play’s ”seditious” contents caused Abad’s arrest in 1903. Tenorio (a colleague in the Kagawaran) played with the dynamics of the original material and the reception of the text (including its playwright as text) from early 20th century to the present. My classes are required to watch this play, and since my Fil 14 students are asked to write a reaction paper to it, I inhibit myself from any further comments.

The play will run until March 1, 2008. You can contact diane.wilwayco@gmail.com for inquiries.
