Is Rizal a Novelist?
Page 124, The Curtain. With the way Kundera discussed the end of Hugo’s Quatrevingt-treize (Hugo’s last, published in1874), I was reminded of Noli’s last chapter (before the epilogue): “Noche Buena.” (What a tragedy, what a waste!) Kundera does not favor Hugo as a novelist. I suddenly felt sad that Kundera might not even think of Rizal as a “minor” novelist–but, quite possibly, not a “real” novelist at all. (Do we really want the people we love to love—or at least, to think favourably of—the others we equally love?)
